We seek to build a relationship with our clients, rather than simply completing a transaction. Dynamic and forward thinking, we are a Law Firm for Life.
Graeme established the McKinstry Company on 1 October 1984 after he successfully negotiated “an earn out” from his previous partnership. Graeme has overseen the development and consolidation of the practice from what was a predominately litigation-based service to a thriving High Street practice across several legal sectors. The business under his guidance, management and chairmanship extends to a business comprising forty people, ten of whom are solicitors, of whom four are partners.
The business occupies one office in Ayr and one in Girvan and serves clients throughout the West of Scotland.
Graeme has held a number of positions within the profession and in the wider public sector having served as a Non-Executive Director of the local Health Trust and was a solicitor member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board.
For six years, Graeme served as a solicitor member of the Scottish Solicitors Discipline Tribunal which reflected his interest in and knowledge of regulatory matters in the profession and was an inaugural member of the Practice Advisory Service established by the law Society of Scotland to assist firms which encountered difficulties either in terms of financial structure or regulatory compliance.
Along side that work, Graeme has served as a co-opted member of both the Client Care and Practice Management Committees of the Law Society of Scotland.
Graeme currently is consulted by solicitors in regard to their own situations whether as individuals, partnerships, limited liability partnerships, seeking advice and guidance, structure and development of their practices.
Graeme has an acute interest in the management and development of law firms and obtained a bespoke Management Degree, and MBA in Legal Practice, graduating from Nottingham Trent University in 2000.
Whilst still engaged to some extent in client matters, Graeme is predominantly involved in the McKinstry Company’s oversight, stability and strategic growth in development in his capacity as Chairman and he brings a wide knowledge of the practice of law and the founding and developing of a dynamic business.
Utilising the knowledge, skills and experience which he has obtained, Graeme established a Management Consultancy Practice – McKinstry Practice Management – which regularly advises solicitors throughout Scotland on a range of management, professional and regulatory issues which arise.
In recognition of Graeme’s expertise in this area, he has been appointed a Consultant to Lockton, the brokers to the Professional Indemnity Insurers of The Law Society of Scotland to assist firms in their approach to risk management.
Outside the law, Graeme is a keen (but poor) golfer being a member at both Turnberry and Royal Troon Golf Clubs here he does his best to master the riggers of two of the country’s leading golf courses and when time permits, he is an avid walker of this daughter’s dog “Poppy”.
