A law firm for life

Meet the New Trainee

Karen Prendergast is the newest addition to The McKinstry Company. Karen has joined our team as a Trainee Solicitor within our private client department at our office in Ayr. She will be dealing with wills, administration of estates, powers of attorney and guardianships. For the past 5 years Karen has been living in Aberdeen but she has recently returned to Ayr where she was born and bred, ready to embark upon the next chapter in her legal career at one of Ayrshire’s largest and most prestigious law firms.

Whilst at Belmont Academy, Karen realised that she had a passion for justice and fairness and that law was a subject she would like to pursue. She decided to pursue this interest and accept her unconditional placement at the University of Aberdeen.

Karen studied both the LLB (with Honours) and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen. Whilst at university, she realised that she had a particular interest in the law of succession. Not only was it one of her strongest subjects, she also decided to write 10,000 words on what is required in Scotland to make a will valid, and how Scottish law compares to the rest of the world. This interest made picking her subjects in the Diploma a lot easier as there was the option to study ‘private client’ which would involve learning about wills and executries. As the Diploma allows aspiring solicitors an insight to the practical side of the legal world, Karen found herself drafting wills according to client instructions given in mock interviews. This was her favourite year at university as she loved the practical side, finally being able to interact with clients instead of reading about how you would interact with clients through a textbook.

Karen’s love for private client comes as no surprise as she is a people person, which is emphasised by her voluntary work. Outside of university, Karen dedicated a huge proportion of her time to working with members of the public by waitressing in cafés and restaurants. However, she would also dedicate her spare time to organisations like Project Turnkey, an organisation that focuses on the rehabilitation of women involved with prostitution. She also volunteered for the Royal Voluntary Service which is dedicated to preventing against isolation and loneliness within the elderly. She would be paired with someone who had recently been discharged from hospital to help them with tasks around their home and to spend time with them. Karen loved working with people from all walks of life and found all experiences extremely rewarding.

Now that Karen is back living in Ayr, she loves to spend time with family and friends, especially her nieces and nephew. Although she is enjoying being back home, Karen also loves to go on holiday and travel. She has just recently returned from her travels around America, traveling from the west to the east coast by planes, trains and automobiles. Asides from this, she enjoys keeping active. Karen has competed in events to raise money for various charities. A few years ago she completed a half marathon at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival to raise money for the Ayrshire Hospice. More recently she completed the Tough Mudder half marathon.

Karen loves a challenge and she can’t wait to take on her next one!
