A law firm for life

Is it time to start thinking seriously about GDPR?

It’s time to start thinking seriously about getting our houses in order to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation?  If you are a business working with non-business clients you will ignore the latter at your peril.

GDPR has been like Brexit.  One of those horrible words of the last few months which you never really thought was going to happen and if it did you weren’t sure what effect it would have on you anyway.

While Brexit and what it will look like is still an abstract notion GDPR is happening in less than a month and your business need to get itself ready now!  Here are some simple tips you need to think about to get you on the right track:-

    • Consider the data (information) you hold and why you need to hold it
    • If you don’t need to hold it then don’t
    • Is the data you are storing accurate
    • How is that data stored and for how long
    • Is your data secure and the providers you rely on, like the cloud, equally secure
    • Review your IT and cyber security – when was the last time you changed all the passwords on your system?
    • Put in place a privacy policy
    • Ensure your privacy policy and cookies policy is visible on your website to allow browsers to give informed consent
    • Let the ICO be your friend – they have lots of help and resource to offer

GDPR compliance is a necessary bind but if done correctly should have no impact on the efficiency of your business and in fact the review suggested above should make your business more resilient in the cyber-crime era in which all our businesses operate.
